Mastering the Swim: Tips for Overcoming Open Water Fears

For many new triathletes, the swim is the most intimidating part of race day. Unlike the controlled environment of a pool, open water brings challenges like deep water, waves, and a pack of other swimmers. But don’t worry—you can learn to conquer your fears and gain confidence in the water! Here are my top tips for overcoming open water anxiety and mastering the swim.


1. Get Comfortable in the Water

Fear often comes from the unknown, so spend time in open water before race day. Start in shallow areas, gradually moving deeper as you gain confidence. If possible, train with a friend or join a local open water swim group for extra support.

2. Practice Sighting

Unlike pool swimming, open water has no lane lines to guide you. Sighting—lifting your head to check your direction—is a skill worth practicing. Try incorporating sighting into your pool sessions so it feels natural on race day.

3. Train in a Wetsuit

If you plan to race in a wetsuit, train in one! Wetsuits provide buoyancy, which can help you feel more secure, but they also feel different than a regular swimsuit. Get used to the fit and practice swimming in it before race day.

4. Start Slow & Control Your Breathing

Many athletes panic at the start of the swim, leading to short, rapid breaths. Focus on slow, controlled breathing and start at an easy pace. If needed, roll onto your back or tread water to reset before continuing.

5. Pick a Smart Start Position

If you’re nervous, don’t start in the middle of the pack. Position yourself toward the side or back to avoid the chaos of the mass start. This will help you settle into your swim without feeling overwhelmed.

6. Visualize Success

Before race day, mentally walk through your swim. Picture yourself gliding through the water, sighting confidently, and staying calm. A strong mental game can help reduce fear and boost confidence.

7. Trust Your Training

At the end of the day, confidence comes from preparation. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll feel in the water. Trust in your training, believe in yourself, and know that you’re ready!
