My Secret Sauce: The 3 Goals System for Triathletes

What happens when you train for months, miss one finish-time goal, and immediately decide the whole race was a failure?

For many Type A triathletes, setting one goal creates an all-or-nothing definition of success:

Hit the number, and the race was successful.
Miss the number, and the day feels like a failure.

In this episode of Coach Erin Says, I share the real secret sauce behind 3 Goals Multisport Coaching: the Happy, Super Happy, and Rockstar Goal System.

What You’ll Learn

In this episode, you’ll learn how to:

  • Create three meaningful goals for your next race
  • Set ambitious time and performance goals based on real evidence
  • Choose a Happy Goal focused on something you can control
  • Shift from Rockstar to Super Happy or Happy when race day changes
  • Avoid turning one missed number into a failed day
  • Apply the system to assessments, long runs, and brick workouts
  • Evaluate your race with both pride and curiosity

The Three Goals

Rockstar Goal

Your biggest exceptional-but-realistic outcome.

This might be:

  • A personal record
  • An age-group podium
  • A Nationals or World Championship qualification
  • An ambitious finish time
  • A major performance breakthrough

A Rockstar Goal should be supported by your current fitness, recent training, previous results, course conditions, and race predictions.

Super Happy Goal

A strong performance that would still feel exciting and meaningful.

It should remain a stretch—not something you would secretly dismiss because the biggest goal did not happen.

Happy Goal

A process, action, or experience you can influence regardless of what the clock says.

Examples include:

  • Follow your fueling plan
  • Walk only through aid stations
  • Stay within your pacing plan
  • Thank the volunteers
  • High-five your teammates
  • Stay present and enjoy the community
  • Cross the finish line with a smile

The Happy Goal is not the lowest goal.

It is the most personal goal.

Why Three Goals Matter

One finish-time goal turns race day into a pass-or-fail test.

The 3 Goals System gives you something ambitious to chase while protecting the meaning of the day when weather, course conditions, nutrition, mechanical issues, illness, or other unexpected challenges affect the result.

When Rockstar begins slipping away, you can shift toward Super Happy.

When Super Happy is no longer realistic, you can focus on Happy.

That shift is not giving up.

It is responding intelligently to the race that is actually happening.

Real Race-Day Examples

In the episode, I share how the system helped both Miguel and me at IRONMAN Texas.

Miguel experienced an incident very early in the swim that could have derailed his entire day. Instead, he reset, continued moving forward, and ultimately reached his Super Happy Goal.

Later that same day, I had a bike crash. The race I had imagined was gone, but my Happy Goal—to finish with a smile, even through tears—was still possible.

I got back on my bike and finished.

I also share how I used a walk-run strategy at IRONMAN Lake Placid to protect my Super Happy Goal after the Rockstar Goal began slipping away.

The three goals are not just ways to evaluate a race afterward.

They can guide your decisions while the race is still unfolding.
